Visitors are seen during a Samcheong Night event, part of Frieze Seoul 2025, at Sunhyewon in Jongno District, central Seoul PODO MUSEUM During the week of Frieze Seoul, there's no better way to take in the beauty of the city's heritage and artistic spirit than visiting the exhibitions held at hanok (traditional Korean houses) and historic estates. Frieze kicks off its four-day run at Coex in Gangnam District, southern Seoul, on Wednesday. Most destinations are within walking distance of each other, in Samcheong-dong and Seochon in central Seoul, which makes the itinerary easy. Less obvious is that no two of these houses have the same art inside them. 'A Note from Trembling Things' at Sunhyewon A historic hanok once resided in by SK Group founder Chey Jong-gun, Sunhyewon, located in Samcheong-dong, central Seoul, opens “A Note from Trembling Things,” a three-person show centering uncertainty in our lives, on Wednesday, the day Frieze Seoul kicks off. A must-see piece there is Palestinian artist Mona Hatoum’s “Web” (2025), a suspended lattice of fine line and glass beads, shown in Korea for the first time. 손오공게임 다운로드 The main building of Sunhyewon, a former residence of SK Group founder Chey Jong-gun now turned into an exhibition and arts space located in Samcheong-dong, Jongno District, central Seoul PODO MUSEUM After Chey died, the venue operated as a corporate guesthouse for years and has since been remodeled into three hanok set into contemporary architecture. Hatoum’s work shares the show with Korean installation artist Choi Sung-im, who knots bread ties into a golden blanket, and Kim Yun-soo, who cuts stroller vinyl into tens of thousands of paper-thin soles. On Thursday, Sunhyewon will stay open from 6 to 9 p.m. for Frieze's Samcheong Night, with a set from Black String, who run Korean traditional music through jazz and rock. No reservation is required for the Samcheong Night event. The exhibition runs through Oct. 31 and admission is free. Park No-soo Museum offers scenic route The exterior of Park No-soo Museum is seen in Jongno District, central Seoul PARK NO-SOO MUSEUM 모바일 바다이야기거북이 The Park No-soo Art Museum in Okin-dong in central Seoul is not a hanok but an old end-of-Joseon-dynasty-era estate. Park was a first-generation Korean ink painter most famous for his ink drawings. The venue occupies a two-story brick house in the area of Seochon built around 1937 for a Joseon official’s daughter, with ondol (Korean heating system) rooms and wooden floors below and several fireplaces. The painter Park himself lived in the estate for 40 years, and the museum opened in 2013 around what he left: roughly 1,000 works, antiques and a garden he planted himself. “Sansu, Gyeokmul,” the 12th-anniversary show of Park No-soo Museum, runs through Dec. 6 and is hung room by room — gyeokmul, the study of a thing until its principle comes clear. Landscapes from the late 1980s and early 1990s occupy the master bedroom, including “Waterside” (1992). Two canvases acquired by the museum last year, “Lotus” (1970) and “Magnolia” (1973), are on view for the first time. Drawings by Park hang in the bathroom and the living room holds Dacheonseook, the furniture, ceramics and scholar’s rocks of a house that Park called a tranquil place for tea and study. 모바일바다이야기 The exhibition runs through Dec. 6 and admission is 3,000 won ($2.20) with only 15 people allowed in each time slot, with shoes required to be taken off. A renovated hanok mansion Woonkyung Mansion, a 100-year-old hanok lived in by politician Lee Jae-hyung, the 12th Speaker of the National Assembly, in Sajik-dong, is also putting up a show during Frieze Seoul. Contemporary artist Kim Dong-hee’s show titled "A House, Arrived Again" at the mansion runs from Wednesday to Oct. 31 with 16 works, 14 of which are new. For the experimental installation show, a staircase climbs from the inner courtyard of the mansion over the wooden hall and down into the back yard. The owners have dug a fan-shaped pit in the inner courtyard so the visitor stands lower than the house and has to look up. The attic of the sarangchae (a section of hanok buildings reserved for guests) has been rebuilt at full scale, flipped left to right, and set outside as a structure you can climb into and look back from. The Woonkyung Mansion’s new opening this time is its first in two years. 정글북 Admission is accepted through reservations only, 15,000 won, with visiting time restricted to 80 minutes. The title comes from something Park said often enough that it worked as a principle: you are finished if you don't change, and finished just as surely if you change badly. The works are spread across K1 and K3 wings of the gallery and the hanok, which is the reason to go — the same dansaekhwa (the Korean monochrome style of painting) surfaces in a white cube, then in a room that opens onto a courtyard. 모바일 바다이야기 게임방법 Hakgojae Gallery is also up the street, its main space a hanok renovated in 1995 and flush against the modern building added in 2008 — the premise of the name of the gallery, “learning from the old.” Artist Kang Yo-bae's 28 paintings, his first in the venue in four years, close on Sept. 12. Kang painted tragedies such as the the Jeju April 3 massacre, but since moving back to the island in 1992 he has mostly painted nature: radish greens, a magnolia, a cat, an anglerfish. A view of the exhibition space at Kukje Gallery's hanok venue in Jongno District, central Seoul KUKJE GALLERY Hakgojae and Kukje both sit on a street that leads from the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA) into the main area of Samcheong-dong, and the two hanok galleries, both offering free admission, are right next to each other, making for a convenient grouping. Kang’s exhibition at Hakjogae will close first. The rest of the exhibitions and shows run into late autumn, and the Park No-soo Museum will keep its hours until December, so a stroll into the hanok venues and estates will be viable even after Frieze Seoul wraps up.
